Great Expectations: Other movies fans could hardly wait for. |

Everyone loves a franchise.
And why wouldn't they? Franchises always mean more of a good thing. More books, films, video games, and unnecessary novelizations for the fans and more money for the Hollywood types.
It's when franchises crossover into new territory that fans get a little nervous. Adapting that awesome comic book or beloved novel into a film can send even the most optimistic and loyal devotees into spasms of fear. We take a look at ten film franchises that had to please rabid fan bases.
TOP 5 SUCCESSES
5. Harry Potter
Why fans go nuts: Who wouldn't prefer magic lessons and Quidditch over times tables and dodgeball? High school would have been a lot more bearable if we'd had the ability to turn the Queen Mean Girl into a ferret. Who's a loser now, Melissa?!
Why the movies succeeded: Even as the later films adopt a darker tone, delving into the elaborate Harry Potter mythology and featuring plenty of scary bits, nothing can make us forget that magic is, you know, fun. Who cares how many people Voldemort killed? Those kids get to bring owls to class! Owls!
4. Spider-Man
Why fans go nuts: The Spider-Man comics was one of the first series to show that heroism has a price and that good guys don't always win. Adapting the series for the big screen was daunting task, but luckily, director Sam Raimi was one of the few people just as dedicated to the fans as he is to the studio.
Why the movies succeeded: When Spider-Man was released in 2002, it was the first big-budget superhero movie in years, so when it didn't completely suck, fans were thrilled. Although they had their faults, both Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 continued the "not sucking" trend, cementing their place in pop culture history and showing movie studio execs that there are big bucks in superheroes.
3. James Bond (Daniel Craig versions)
Why fans go nuts: James Bond is a dashing British secret agent who drinks martinis while on the job, travels to exotic locales, single-handedly defeats insane megalomaniacal villains, drives gadget-tricked luxury cars and beds the world's hottest women without effort and with impunity. Men want to be him and women want to be with him.
Why the movies succeeded: Before 2006's Casino Royale, Bond had always had a penchant for the cartoonish and therefore was unworthy of serious critical acclaim. Daniel Craig presented a dark, deadly and not-as-dashing version of the secret agent that, once coupled with a compelling and deep script from Paul Haggis, reinvented the Bond franchise in the psychologically complex mould of the Bourne films - and one that was surprisingly in keeping with author-creator Ian Fleming's original vision. Even the most fussy of fans were impressed.
2. Batman (Christopher Nolan versions)
Why fans go nuts: A night-stalking avenger cloaked in shadowy blacks and greys who avenges the death of his parents by fighting crime in Gotham City, Batman has always been an evocative symbol of humanity's need for vengeance and retribution - while also being one of the most popular superheroes out there.
Why the movies succeeded: All fans ever wanted from their Batman movies was for filmmakers to stay true to the best of the source material and to take it seriously. With a resume of intense and dark films, director Christopher Nolan was the man for the job. Taking the best elements of the comic books and infusing the movies with his own penchant for symbolism and shadowy themes, Nolan not only created solid graphic-novel adaptations, he created some of the greatest films of the last decade.
1. Lord of the Rings
Why fans go nuts: British historian J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved trilogy of novels essentially created the fantasy genre. Blending elements of various northern European mythologies, his interest in history and languages and his experiences as a soldier in the First World War, Tolkien created the world of Middle Earth, hobbits, elves, dwarves, wizards and the epic struggle between the forces of good and evil for the Ring of Power. Since its publication in the mid 1950s, the series (plus its prequel The Hobbit) has sold an estimated 250 million copies and has inspired legions of fans who revere the books.
Why the movies succeeded: Kiwi director Peter Jackson and his co-writers Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh somehow managed to adapt what many felt was un-adaptable by grounding the epic-sized events of the novels in the emotional journeys of the characters. Assembling an incredible, uncannily spot-on cast, filming in the fantastical landscapes of New Zealand and developing some of the greatest special effects on film didn't hurt either. Despite the impossibly huge expectations fans had for the films, Jackson & Co. somehow surpassed them - creating a new benchmark for sci-fi and fantasy films.

THIS is the beauty who has won the heart of funnyman JOHN CLEESE — a blonde called BARBIE.
The 69-year-old Fawlty Towers star has been enjoying romantic dates with American comedienne Barbie Orr, 27.
Three-times wed Cleese, who is old enough to be Barbie’s grandad, was spotted hugging and holding hands with her on Wednesday.
The couple met up at the exclusive Loews Hotel in Santa Monica, US. Barbie, in a tight pink top and jeans, waited for Cleese in the lobby and the star, who played manic hotel boss Basil Fawlty, greeted her with a kiss.
They later enjoyed dinner in the hotel restaurant.
A guest said: “They were enjoying each others’ company immensely.
“Cleese’s booming voice turned everyone’s head. His date couldn’t stop laughing at him pulling funny faces. They were touching and nuzzling each other. He seemed very happy.”
The couple later went for a stroll nearby.
Barbie says on her website her motto is “Life is a daring adventure — or nothing at all.”
US-based Cleese — hen-pecked by wife Sybil in Fawlty Towers — is divorcing his third wife Alyce Faye Eichelberger.
Last month he complained of “insane” £1million alimony payments to her.

Producer Mark Canton (300) is teaming with Pterodactyl Productions on a pair of big screen projects that include a film about iconic cowboy character and B-movie Western staple Bill "Hopalong" Cassidy, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Created in 1904 by writer Clarence E. Mulford, the Cassidy character appeared as a rough-talking galoot in a series of popular stories and novels before segueing to the big screen in 1935 as a clean-cut hero. William Boyd played the character in 66 films throughout the 1930s, '40s and '50s.
Affectionately known by millions as "Hoppy," the character also spawned comic books, radio serials and the first network TV Western series. Cassidy also became the first image to be featured on a lunchbox.
Canton and Pterodactyl are also tackling another story engrained in pop culture, that of the French Connection heroin heist perpetrated by a group of NYPD narcotics detectives. Honor for Sale, based on a book by Gerald Kelly, will revolve around the group of detectives who ran the largest narcotics distribution ring in the '70s. The true story inspired the two "French Connection" films from the '70s as well as the recent American Gangster.
The script was written by the late John Bishop.

Interview: John Lasseter |
Nov 21, 2008 |

Earlier this week, I have th great oppurtunity to talk to Academy Award-winning animator and chief creative officer at Pixar and Disney Animation Studios, John Lasseter. While the phone call was primarily about Disney’s new release Bolt, we went off topic a couple of times and talked about IMAX, 3D and Blu-ray.
/Film: Hi, John.
John Lasseter: Hi, Peter. How are you?
/Film: Good. I just want to first say I’m a huge fan. As you can tell, SlashFilm has followed all the Pixar productions closely and we just love everything you’ve done.
John Lasseter: Oh thank you so much. Yeah, thanks so much for you guy’s support, too.
/Film: The project “Bolt” didn’t first start off as “Bolt”. It’s started off as a film called “American Dog” with Chris Sanders directing.
John Lasseter: Right.
/Film: Can you talk a little bit about that and how that evolved into what it is?
John Lasseter: Sure, yeah. You know when the merger of Disney and Pixar happened and Bob Iger and Steve Jobs asked me to be the Chief Creative Officer at Disney, as well as Pixar, you know I came in and there was a handful of movies that had been kind of started down here. “American Dog” was one of them. And I always thought that the premise of that had a lot of potential for heart, you know the character that it is a dog that stars in this kind of action TV show. And he thinks he has these real powers, and so he gets separated from the TV show and learns that he, in fact, doesn’t have any powers and he’s just a regular dog. But he has no idea about how to be a regular dog, and so he’s taught how to be a regular dog by a cat. But it’s a deeper story about this friendship, and loyalty and unconditional love that dogs have for their owners. And I think that I had put great possibilities. It’s one of those difficult situations where we’ve done this a couple times before with “Toy Story 2″ and with “Ratatouille”, where the potential of film, it’s just we were having kind of creative differences with reaching that potential, and so we brought on Chris Williams and Byron Howard, two young guys here to direct it, because they’re so funny, but they also have a tremendous amount of heart in them. And it’s always a difficult situation, because I love Chris Sanders. He’s a great guy and brilliant talent, and it’s always sort of difficult, but it’s the right thing to do for the movie.
/Film: Oh definitely. What do you think the biggest change was in the direction that you took “Bolt” from what Sanders was doing to what it is today?
John Lasseter: Well I think part of it was focusing on the believability of this dog, and we could set it up so the audience can understand how this dog could believe that this is all real. And so there’s a little focus on kind of making the animals in the film feel a little bit more like real animals. We studied tremendously dogs and cats and the way they move and the way they look, also, in finding that truism kind of in the way that they move. And I think a great example of that is the pigeons.

Movie Review: Twilight862 |
Nov 21, 2008 |
Petes1234567 |
Other |
I always admire any movie that can effectively convey the trials and tribulations of high school without resorting to parody or mockery. High school is typically (and rightfully) portrayed as a time of great emotional upheaval, where friendships are formed and broken, alliances are tested, and worldviews are carved into one’s character. Given the setting’s potential for some great (melo)drama, it seems as though director Catherine Hardwicke, whose critically acclaimed Thirteen also dealt with the hardships of teenage life, would be a perfect choice to direct Twilight. Indeed, Twilight is at its strongest when it’s offering its spin on high school romance. Virtually every element of angst-filled adolescence is on display here - the awkward first meeting with your girlfriend’s parents, the pressures of finding a date for prom, school lunch tables as a gauge of popularity - and all of them are rendered faithfully. But setting these aside, does the rest of Twilight offer the casual viewer a compelling experience?
Based on the first of Stephanie Meyer’s wildly successful series of novels, Twilight tells the story of Bella (Kristen Stewart), a plain girl from Arizona who moves to the small town of Forks, Washington to stay with her father. While learning the ropes of the social scene at her local high school, Bella falls in love with Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), one of the school’s hottest boys who just happens to be a vampire. In fact, the entire Cullen family, led by the enigmatic Dr. Carlisle Cullen (Peter Facinelli), is made up of vampires who have learned to co-exist peacefully with humans by subsisting off the blood of animals. But when a competing group of vampires (led by Edi Gathegi) begins encroaching on the Cullens’ territory, they threaten to destroy the life that Bella and Edward have struggled to create.
For fans of any property, there’s almost always visceral thrill from seeing characters that once existed only in your mind be brought to life on the big screen. I realize that nothing I say or write can possibly take away from this joy in the hearts of all the Twilight readers out there; in fact, a small part of me is extremely happy for them. It’s clear that that the phenomenon of this film has brought people a level of excitement that I’m loath to counteract (who among us hasn’t felt enthusiastically wrapped up in a popular franchise before?). For everyone else: In a year that has brought us unforgettable renditions of vampire through films and shows like True Blood and Let the Right One In, Twilight falls far short of giving us an engaging take on the vampire mythos or the teen romance. The movie isn’t terrible, but viewers who aren’t fans of the book series won’t find much to like here.

Interview with director Mark Herman |
Nov 21, 2008 |

It won’t be long before there’s nobody left who can personally recollect the trauma caused by World War II. Being only a young boy when he first saw a picture of the effects of the gas chambers – an image that sticks with him to this day – director Mark Herman wanted to make sure that no one forget or grow complacent with the past. When he read an early draft of John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, he knew immediately it was a story he had to make. Shown from the perspective of a naïve German boy, the film stands as a testament to youthful bliss and the equality of people regardless of nationality. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a film for future generations, bearing a message that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. |

Xbox and Netflix Taste Great Together |

I've ranted once or twice about some of the geekier goodies I've found through Netflix, but somehow this one got by me. It'd been a while since I'd visited Hacking Netflix, which is an excellent blog by the way, and it was there that I read ... huh, what's this? I can now view ALL* my "Watch Instantly" titles through my Xbox 360? Really? Well I just had to check that out.
My system needed to update to the jazzy new 360 dashboard, but introducing my Xbox to my Netflix queue was remarkably easy. Now, you can't exactly browse through the Netflix website -- in fact the 360 system only accesses your WI queue. But I watched two episodes of Heroes (Season 3) and the whole of Sam Peckinpah's The Killer Elite (starring James Caan AND Robert Duvall!) in one enjoyable sitting. (Yeah, I'm a good sitter.) Just another reason that Xbox is cooler than Playstation ... says the guy who plays games with his console maybe five times a year.
In other Netflix news, I've discovered a few more obscurities that might be worthy of note: In addition to the aforementioned Peckinpah film, I recently watched a few Gene Hackman ones from 1977: March or Die and The Domino Principle. Both uneven, but dang I love Gene Hackman. Other recent flicks include George C. Scott in The Hindenburg (meh), Marooned (more Hackman!), and THX 1138 (more Duvall!) And I finally saw the mega-weird Spider Baby. Sheesh. Frankly the Netflix Watch Insantly service has improved exponentially since they partnered up with Starz. Now there's NO excuse for me not to have a movie on at all times.
(* Nope, not all. Some of your queued titles will NOT be available via your 360. According to the HN blog, looks like it's all the Sony-owned titles.) |

Josh Brolin Can't Decide Whether He's 'Jonah Hex' or Not |

Poor Jonah Hex. As William Goss reported earlier, Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have left the scarred cowboy behind due to creative differences. But does he still have Josh Brolin to play him, or not?
The truth is, Brolin can't decide if he is. He had a chat with MTV News that didn't decide the question, but did reveal his enthusiasm for the project: "When I first read it I thought, oh my God it's awful! And then I had a moment a week later and I thought why is it awful? Maybe the thing to do is to do the most awful movie I can find ... [I love] the absurdity of it. It almost allows you to create a new genre. I love going back into the spaghetti western idea and completely turning it around."
Will he ever make up his mind? "Soon. In the last couple months I've been going back and forth about it. I went back to my gut. Is it a sell out? What is it I like about this movie? ... It's so tongue in cheek. It's so ridiculous. But once I started putting people in my mind and saying what if I put Malkovich in this role then what does this movie become? Now let's put this producer and director on it and think about how it plays out. Then it becomes fun. Now I love that movie. If you have a great filmmaker come in then suddenly these gags and characters become interesting."
And with that, the reason for Neveldine and Taylor's departure might have become a little clearer. Like Goss, I enjoy their work, and I think their Jonah Hex would have been a lot of subversive fun. Now, if Brolin's involvement gives us something closer to High Plains Drifter rather than Crank in cowboy hats, I'm all for it. But how many of the "gags and characters" will remain without Neveldine and Taylor? |

Bryan Singer Talks 'Superman' Sequel and 'Valkyrie' |

It's a bird, it's a plane ... no wait, it's Bryan Singer dodging more Superman sequel questions!
Pretty soon Bryan Singer will be doing a big publicity push for Valkyrie, and when that time comes look for folks to be bombarding him with Superman sequel scenarios ("Well what if you half-produced it and starred as a villainous mutant Hitler who wears an eye patch -- is that an option?"). After all, things are still way up in the air regarding further installments for a franchise that's ... let's just say stalled at the moment. MTV managed to snag a quick chat with Singer regarding Valkyrie and you betcha they snuck a Supes question in there. On whether he'll be directing, Singer says, "At the moment, I can't really talk about that. I wish I could. From my perspective, I'm going to take a brief pause. This movie has taken a long time, so I'm going to take a pause. A movie like that takes some time to do right. That's all I can say about that."
The good news? Singer "can't" talk about it, which means something is brewing and he'd love to share his opinion. Most likely the studio has him on "shut the hell up" watch, which probably means we won't get anything more with regards to Superman until a decision on where exactly they're going with this sucker is made. Interestingly enough, he does admit to having dinner with The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan. Says Singer, "We had dinner, and [Marvel Studios founder] Avi Arad ran into us. Isn't that strange? It was such a moment. The three of us were just sitting there thinking, "Isn't this bizarre?" I should have called ["Spider-Man" director Sam] Raimi up and said, "We've got sushi. Get over here!"
Tom Cruise meets Hitler after the jump!
Also in the interview, Singer addressed all the nasty rumors and Scientology hatin' surrounding Valkyrie by noting that it's "not something that was a surprise to me, but it does weigh on you. I can't do anything about their speculation. I'm not Hitler. I can't blot it out. I want people to see the film. It's a film that people need to see before they judge. It opens with a bit of a bang, and then, about a third of the way in, a little ticking clock starts, and it moves faster and faster right up until the last frame. And you get to see Tom Cruise come face to face with Adolf Hitler!"
I wonder if they'll hug it out?
Read the rest over at MTV. Valkyrie is due in theaters on December 26. |

Rest Easy: Matthew McConaughey Will NOT Play Magnum P.I. |

This is one of those festering casting rumors that’s just really gotten under my skin over the last year or two. Magnum P.I. played by…Matthew McConaughey. No. Just no. I have sat back and watched Rosie O’Donnell play Betty Rubble. I stayed silent. Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott as Bo and Luke. I let it go. No longer!
But lo and behold I don’t have to get angry at the prospect of the star of “Surfer Dude” playing Magnum. Brian Grazer just told me it’s not happening. So it’s not going to be McConaughey, I asked? “No,” he said. “I think the idea for ‘Magnum P.I.’ is to find a counterpoint, to not try and find the new Tom Selleck but to find someone that is just so different that you go, oh my God! That guy is Magnum?!?”
Grazer confirmed that he has a script for a “Magnum” film but reiterated that it’s going to come down to finding the right guy.”It’s so much about casting. You have to find the actor that adds through his own personality something to the title.”
Anyone come to mind? In the past everyone from Vince Vaughn to George Clooney have been rumored for the role. Or should it go to an unknown? |

New Poster and Trailer: Disneynature's EARTH |

When Disney launched their new production banner Disneynature last April, the first feature release they announced was a joint BBC, Discovery Channel and Greenlight Media documentary titled "Earth". Back then the press release included a trailer for the film which featured extraordinary images of three animal families all narrated by a Sir Richard Attenborough.
Now, seven months later, the press release from Disneynature includes a new trailer for "Earth" featuring extraordinary images of three animal families all narrated by James Earl Jones – Vive la difference!
No matter who is doing the talking, the stars of this trailer are the animals, including what appears to be a suicidal duckling. Disney also sent over the first poster for the film, featuring extraordinary images of three… oh, you get the idea. Fans of nature, great photography and rich baritones will find a lot to like in the footage – those who hate baby animals, on the other hand, may balk at the extreme levels of adorable on display.
Disneynature is releasing "Earth" theatrically on April 22, 2009 – otherwise known as Earth Day. Here is the synopsis the studio sent along with the trailer and the poster for the documentary:
The first film in the Disneynature series, "Earth", narrated by JAMES EARL JONES, tells the remarkable story of three animal families and their amazing journey across the planet we all call home. "Earth" combines rare action, unimaginable scale and impossible locations by capturing the most intimate moments of our planet's wildest and most elusive creatures. Directors Alastair Fothergill and Mark Linfield combine forces again to bring this epic adventure to the big screen, beginning Earth Day 2009. |

Mila Kunis Saves Us From The Apocalypse |

M ila Kunis has had roles in two high-profile movies this year that gave audiences very, very different impressions. If you caught her in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, you probably think of her as a pretty, charming dream girl. But if you saw Max Payne, you'd wonder why anyone would sign on for such a thankless role that involved nothing but holding a gun.
Kunis really seems to be best-suited to comedy, which is why I wonder about her new role in The Book of Eli, a post-apocalyptic thriller starring Denzel Washington. The Hollywood Reporter says she'll play Solara, who is at first hired to betray Washington's Eli, a hero trying to find a book that could save humanity. Whether motivated by strong morals or Washington's irresistible charm, Solara eventually joins him on his quest.
The movie sounds like a whole lot of nonsense, but then, so do a lot of great fantasy and sci-fi stories. I still wonder about Kunis, who deserves the chance to show off her charm in movie roles, but rarely gets it. If this movie is even slightly better than Max Payne-- and that's not really that hard-- it might finally be her breakout role.

Twilight Stars Reuniting... As Men |

Petes1234567 |

The MTV Movies Blog hasn't been known to report Onion-style faux news stories, and I didn't think Nikki Reed and Kristen Stewart had it in them to pull a fast one on the press. So I guess we have no choice but to believe this loony new story, that Stewart, who plays Bella in Twilight, and Reed, who plays Rosalie will reunite in the movie K-11, playing gay male inmates at a Los Angeles prison.
Oh, and the movie will be directed by Stewart's mom, Jules Stewart, who has been a script supervisor for movies like Are We There Yet?. And the movie's actual star will be Jason Mewes, a.k.a. Jay from the Kevin Smith movies. Reed, of course, seems to think this is all logical. “I have full faith in Jules. I suppose I would be [nervous about the handling of our transformations] if it were coming from left field, but I’ve known about the script for a very long time.”
Well, if 20-year-old Nikki Reed says it'll be a good movie... I guess we have to believe her? This sounds a lot like when Olivia Thirlby and Ellen Page were promoting Juno and told the press they would star together in a movie about teenage lesbian werewolves. Are all the young starlets of America just punking us? Or are there suddenly amazing, weird roles waiting for every girl who stars in a movie that opens at #1. And if that's the case, why is Megan Fox still showing up in dumb movies?

After the massive success of the Discovery Channel’s Planet Earth series, suddenly everyone is hot to get in on the nature game. Disney’s first into the lake next Earth Day when their new Disneynature division releases earth.
earth uses stunning nature footage to tell a made up, fictional story around various animals. But from the shots in the movie’s first trailer and from its poster below, the reason to watch this is precisely the same reason you tuned into the Discovery Channel. Imagine seein Planet Earth in a movie theater instead of in your humble living room. In fact, I’m fairly certain at least some of the footage in this trailer for earth was part of the Discovery Channel’s TV series. That shot of the shark jumping out of the water looks familiar. No matter, it’s worth seeing in big screen, big sound format.

People Get The Dark Knight For Free |

I’m pretty much an anachronism. I still do things like buy and rent DVDs. Heck, I even go see movies in theaters from time to time. That’s old news; headed the way of the buggy whip. These days nobody pays to watch movies. They download them for free on the Internet.
According to Torrent Freak, The Dark Knight will lead the way this year as the most illegally downloaded film of 2008. DVD-rips of the grim superhero epic were downloaded off BitTorrent more than a million times this week. That makes it the most downloaded movie of the week and the site figures it will“crush Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Transformers, as it will easily become this year’s most pirated movie.” Anything that crushes crap like Transformers is good in my book. While I’m sure the producers would like to have the money they lost to pirating, they will just have to lay on their billion dollars and figure out a way to get over it.

Will Smith Talks "Old Boy" Remake |

It was recently reported that Steven Spielberg is working out a deal with Will Smith to star in a remake of "Old Boy," which Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend) will write. But with so such big names attached to redo such a great property, there are many questions on fans' minds.
FilmSchoolRejects attended the "Seven Pounds" premiere, where they had the chance to ask Smith a few questions about the "Old Boy" remake, which Smith says will not be a remake since it is not an adaptation of Chan-wook Park's 2003 film.
"We're looking at that right now," said Smith. "Not the film though, it's the original source material. There's the original comics of 'Oldboy' that they made the first film from. And that's what we're working from, not an adaptation of the film."
Judging by that, it seems that Spielberg never bothered to acquire rights to the film, but focused more on the "Oldboy" graphic novel. This means that the 2003 movie that so many love will be left alone.
Are you glad that Spielberg is not remaking the film?

Warner Bros. has signed Get Smart director Peter Segal and his Callahan Filmworks partner Michael Ewing to a three-year first-look deal, reports Variety.
Segal and Ewing kick off the deal with Liam McBain: International Tennis Star and Proper English Geezer, a Chip Hall-scripted spec script. Segal will develop to direct a film that follows the rise, fall and ultimate redemption of a fictional British tennis star of the '80s.
As part of the deal, WB has also acquired the John August-scripted Captain Marvel; Segal will direct the DC Comics adaptation. He and Ewing began working on the film two years ago at New Line, but the property has moved over to WB. The film tells the story of teenaged Billy Batson, who transforms into the superhero when he says the word "Shazam!"
Deal comes as Segal prepares to direct a sequel to Get Smart for WB and Village Roadshow Pictures. Ewing was a producer of the original film, along with Chuck Roven, Alex Gartner and Andrew Lazar. Segal was an executive producer. The Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember-scripted sequel is expected to shoot next year.

The new movie is directed by Peyton Reed, who is responsible for helming such films as "The Break-Up" and "Bring It On." "Yes Man" is scheduled to hit theaters on December 19th.
